In 1997, the Government of Saskatchewan identified the following five areas as growth areas of the economy, and created the Saskatchewan Cultural Industries Development Council:
The SCIDC aims to foster and nurture the cultural industries in Saskatchewan. We work to provide policy direction for the Cultural Industries to the government, and to co-ordinate the implementation of our Cultural Industries Development Strategy (CIDS). We also want to create awareness of how the cultural industries positively impact our economy: When you support the cultural industries by buying Saskatchewan-made products, you boost the $75 million that goes into our economy every year. By attending Saskatchewan cultural events like book launches, concerts, art shows, film debuts, and craft markets, you support jobs, the economy, and growth. The world knows about our province and its people through stories, songs, arts and crafts and moving pictures, created in Saskatchewan by Saskatchewan professionals. The commercial products of cultural industries reflect ideas, attitudes, values, and opinions; express creativity; provide entertainment; and offer information and analysis. The cultural industries are the third-largest growth industry in Canada.
